[...]did the track details (geometry and profile) change so much that a modern loco would not be able to handle 1950s track... or 1930s?

The geometry changed a bit but not as much to cause any serious trouble. I tried it with my own M-Gleis 3600/3900 layout from around 1955 and a couple of modern locos: BR 218, BR 44, V 200, even a GG-1 (although she looks rather stupid in 36cm-curves ). Very smooth, no problem whatsoever. You can even operate a layout built from almost 80 year old tracks with a digital station and run an ICE3 on it if you so please.

@Ian: how could I ever doubt you? Of course you know the 3900/3800 track system and you have tons of them!^^ Everybody knows that those tracks were extremely expensive so that they were cancelled only a few years later. But it will remain Märklin's secret, why they've never integrated those wonderful wide curves in the later pin-contact Gleis with some modifications and simpler design...

Best regards,
Christoph

Christoph, there are many secrets surrounding Märklin's track system especially when it comes to turnouts, they never had problems or hesitations about producing a double slip turnout for M-track or K-track but have failed so far miserable to do so with the C-track.

Hallo Joerg,

I decided to keep the 7 layouts all seperate on the lower level.

My digital Loks will have the run of the top level. ( K Gleis.)

Ian.

Hello Ian,

although I was never dedicated to Märklin, I grew up with Fleischmann, I am deeply impressed by your history tour. It is absolutely fascinating and I will keep acompanying your further development of the single layouts.

Viele Grüße

Yes, so I hear. However, those problems are none of my concern because I've never used or owned a single piece of C-track. I'm fully satisfied with the performance of my good old "3600" Nevertheless it would be great to have a double slip turnout for the 3900-system, which was also never made, just a simple crossing.

"One day", huh?
Thanks for posting those great pics. It's quite fascinating, that utter ruthless compatibility. Only with Märklin. They may do lots of things that we puny mortals may never understand, but maintainig the standard for almost 80 years now... that's pretty damn awesome.

Hook her up and see what happens If there's a track with a built-in suppressor capacitor, you might want to remove that one first. As I already said: I've tried it on my own layout which isn't from the 1930s though, but technically, it's the same thing.

Cheers,
Christoph

Of course, what I should maybe ask myself is, who would want to.....

As a friend of mine tried this, the tracks shout: "Phew" and then they crumbled! It´s a true story (he said!)

I have a video of 3 Loks pulling 100 Banana vans on my new M track layout.

2 Loks pulling 40 vans each and 1 lok pulling 20 vans.

I'll post the video soon.

Hallo,

Here we have my 1935 anlage (78 year old track.)

I connected up a spare MS2, using only 1 power feed point, and ran 3 digital Loks.

I think it was a success, and the selection of 3 Loks all ran very well...

Märklin at it's best....forward planning.
