Hallo Vladimir,

Dein Diorama ist suuuper geworden. Einerseits schön, dass es fertig ist - andererseits schade, weil wir dann nicht mehr mit so schönen Bildern versorgt werden. Ich hoffe Du baust noch irgendwie weiter. Die Bilder - insbesondere die schwarz-weißen sind sehr gelungen. Man kann sich wirklich in die Zeit des Wilden Westens versetzen, so echt sind sie.

Hallo Freunde! Ein Wunder geschah, und ich habe ein Bild von Ihrem Layout auf der Straße. Nur für Sie bereit eine Beschreibung meiner Arbeit.

I have designed this layout to portray an era gone by, and it features a landscape and a number of structures typical of the last decade of the 19th century and the early 1900s. It was interesting for me to explore the railroading in the United States as it was almost 150 years ago.

About a year ago I took interest in assembling old American railroad cars dated around 1865-1900 from various wood kits produced since the 1950s. Some of the companies that make these cars are no longer in the market, but their products, highly valued among the modelers, can still be found online. Their fine details allow us to build small masterpieces: real wooden cars, metal bogie trucks equipped with working springs, everything in perfect order though reduced by a factor of 87. These cars are usually produced as kits. Assembling these kits make me feel like a professional who spends his time building a railroad car from blueprints and fitting various kit parts together. Weathering is also very enjoyable, as it makes cars look very much like their real life counterparts.

After building a number of these cars, I wanted to create a natural environment to display them, and this is how this diorama was born. I got some inspiration from Buster Keaton's General, a silent comedy film featuring a large number of old time artifacts, including rolling stock, structures, etc. I also based my work on a number of historical black and white photos found on line, and got some inspiration from other American-themed layouts.

My first idea was to find a suitable prototype and recreate it as close to reality as possible. However, after some consideration, I decided to apply a more generic license and try to fit my best ideas into this small layout, providing a good background for displaying the models that I had built. I have decided to use both standard and narrow gauge track on my layout, as my collection features some H0n3 rolling stock running on 10.5 mm track. Another feature that I had in mind for the diorama was a large wooden bridge of an American design. I decided to use this bridge as a background element.

Set to finish the work before an upcoming exhibition in St.Petersburg, Russia, I started collecting and studying available photos and blueprints. I was only able to find blueprints for the bridge, so I had to base the other strucures on photo material that I had found. All the houses and other structures, as well as trees and other growth were created from scratch.

The layout base was built from plywood planks, I have assembled a perimeter, then added diagonal braces for added sturdiness and finally fixed a 3mm plywood sheet to act as the layout surface. I used foam for terrain features, as it can be easily cut into required shapes by a simple knife. Then I covered the layout with a layer of cotton cloth soaked in White Glue and put some plaster on top. This is my preferred method for making rocks and outcroppings.

I also extensively used online search engines that let the user directly explore the nature of the modeled region and details like tree shapes, color of grass and earth, which made it possible to closely reproduce this detail on the layout.

Before creating the layer of grass, all ground was tinted with red and brown acrylic paints. These paints had to be diluted with large amounts of water in order to produce a light tint instead of a solid color. I used a flocking applicator to cover the layout with small clumps that are easy to prepare by hand. Take a transparent file, cover it with drops of PVA and turn on the flock applicator. After a minute or so, this simple technique produces more than a hundred grass clumps of the required color. I sprayed some acrylic paint over them to add a dry and withered tint.

The trees used on the layout were hand crafted by Mikhail Glukhov, another Russian modeler, whose products are of an exceptional quality. His trees are true masterpieces, exquisitely detailed, with pine and spruce trees feature tiny needles several microns thick and less than one millimeter in length. He based his trees on photos of real trees growing in the region that I wanted to be represented on the layout.

The diorama also features some water. Rivers and lakes take up some space, but they really make the scene come alive when they look as realistic as possible. In order to achieve a natural look, I first paint the bottom and then pour a special liquid that imitates water surface after it dries.

I decided to hand lay the track on the diorama, so I cut sleepers from birch strips of slightly varied lengths; this was typical of railroads in the depicted time frame, according to the photo material that I used. I wanted the track on the diorama to look like it was laid right on the ground, without much stone ballast. I used Peco code 75 for tracks and switches. While laying down the track I separated metal parts from plastic and fastened them to the sleepers using tiny spikes. I made spikes of common #10 paper clips. It took time to produce some 700 sleepers and 2800 spikes used on the layout but the effort made the track look close to the prototype. The painting of track was done using brushes of various shape and size. The sleepers were covered in alcohol stain; after they dried, I applied a dry brush to, which made the natural wood texture more visible. The same technique was used for painting structures.

I have chosen to build and detail a number of structures for the layout and use them as focal points. First, I placed a small shop and a load-unload track along the pier on the riverbank. The track is used to load ships with goods brought in by the railroad and further transport these goods by river. These structures are losely based on historical photos. The shop and the pier are super detailed, they are placed in the foreground and are the most visible elements on the diorama. For this super detailing, I used various bits and parts acquired online and made some detailing from scratch, like the wires on the woodshed and the firewood. Barrels, water cans, sacks and other items were all painted and weathered, effectively removing the plastic shine and making the details fit into the scene. Initially I wanted to place a small ship next to the pier, however I had to abandon the idea due to lack of space and only used a fishing boat with the figure of a fisherman.

I also made a woodshed of stripwood and small wooden planks. I used a commercially available woodshed resin kit as an inspiration; however, I was not satisfied by the quality of the kit so I decided to recreate it from scratch. During layout building, I experiment a lot, so this time I tried to mix acrylic paint with an acetone dye stain. The resulting congealed mix was used to paint the woodshed. This produced the effect of the peeling paint that I liked.

I devised an interesting way to make the water tanks used on the layout. I used a lathe machine to make CEM tanks with walls measuring only 0.8mm in thickness. I then glued tiny wooden planks on top of these tanks. As a result, these tanks are watertight.

I added internal lightning to all structures on the layout. For this, I used tiny incandescent bulbs instead of LED lights, because I feel the light produced by bulbs looks more natural.

When the structures were finished and put in place, I added some model figures, organizing them in a number of life-like scenes.

The layout took much time to build and complete. I spent about 8 months working on the diorama in my free time. Various tools were used to build the base of the layout, including a coping saw, an electric drill, screwdrivers, modelers' knives, and the white glue. I had to use 0.6mm micro drill bits to make holes for placing nut and bolt mock ups and a modeler's saw to make small cuts without tearing the surface. Tweezers, needle files, jeweler's screwdrivers and other tools were also used.

As soon as the construction works on the layout were completed, I added some rolling stock, which made the whole diorama seem to come alive.

When everything was finished I felt some sort of satisfaction. Of course, I may add some details later, because for me, a model railroad can never be truly completed.

Das ist ja ein ganz phantastisches Diorama. Meine Frau wollte beim Anblick der Szenen und dann auch noch vor dem strahlend blauen Himmels im Hintergrund erst gar nicht glauben, dass es ein Modell und nicht eine echte 1:1-Szene ist. Wir beide freuen uns auf weitere Bilder. Das muss ja auf der Moba-Ausstellung der allererste Hingucker gewesen sein, kann ich mir vorstellen. Meine Frau und ich konnten jedenfalls die Augen nicht mehr vom Bildschirm nehmen. Da stimmt einfach alles.

Die selbstverlegten Gleise haben einen besonderen Reiz. Sehr gelungen finde ich auch das Klavier und die Milchkannen am Pier. Wir werden uns da ganz sicher die eine oder andere Sache für die eigene Moba abgucken. Herrlich!
